Tuesday To Do List — what to buy, spy, and try! (or sometimes cry about)

Tuesday To Do List is my newest attempt at bringing you tidbits from the gluten-free world each week. This will continue until my mind-that-doesn’t-rest comes up with another way to entertain you guys. Cross your fingers I am back here next Tuesday with another list…

  • Although we can’t buy it here in Wisconsin yet, I got a sneak peek at Coors Peak, the newest gluten-free beer on the market from MillerCoors. Of course I had to have my signature orange slice, but it’s actually quite tasty! Definitely more mild tasting than many I have tried, which is a very good thing. I’ll keep you posted when you can put it on your grocery list!

  • I’m going to try to make my own pumpkin puree this season — and you know I love a good graphic. 😉

  • I saved this one for end so as not to downer debbie the whole list… but I hope you still add it to your to-do list for this week…

Be kind. We need to come together as a community and support one another. I’m sure you have read a post or two about the ongoing saga with “gluten-free” (but not really safe for celiacs) Cheerios.

I’ve already talked about it a few times and have been posting often on Facebook, but take a moment to read up from other GF friends:

The last one, from Johnna at In Johnna’s Kitchen is the one I want you think about: our GF friends are getting sick. All over the country. From eating the new Cheerios. This makes me so nervous.

Many have reached out to Cheerios/General Mills, even a petition was created, and unfortunately the general  consensus of the replies has been that they are unaware of any issues.

There is a big problem. Change needs to happen. Right now. Before more of our dear friends get sick.

I’ve been transparent about my experimentation with Cheerios — I tried them before Gluten Free WatchDog said they aren’t safe for celiacs. I had both regular and honey nut. They were delicious. Thank goodness I didn’t get sick, BUT that was two boxes…the next two might not be safe. That’s a risk I can’t take. So I said farewell to that childhood fave for now until I can be sure all boxes are safe and the comments and messages to me stop from people getting sick.

I take my role in this community very seriously and often with my heart on my sleeve — sure, it would have been fun and FREE to have the reps from CHEERIOS send over a box of every new flavor, but I declined. And I will continue to do so until this problem is addressed.

In the meantime…let’s be kind to one another, okay? One thing I adore about the gluten-free community is the way we rally when someone is in need of our help — there are all kinds of “someones” this time (just take a look a that map!) and we need to rally now.

  • Once upon a time, I got to meet THE Pioneer Woman — I talked a mile a minute telling her what a big fan I was and that I had found out about her wonderfulness through Shauna from Gluten Free Girl and the Chef. Although I don’t follow along as closely as I used to, (I’m still sad that Google Reader is no longer!) I’m still a big fan, have a couple of her books, make her baked beans recipe by request, and will probably end up buying a piece from her new collection because it’s so dang pretty. (she is too and she’s hilariously down to earth)

  • And speaking of Gluten Free Girl… they have a new cookbook coming out this week! Their recipes have never let me down and I’m guessing this one will not disappoint: American Classics Reinvented. It’s already in my cart to buy on Amazon.

Gluten Free at the Minnesota State Fair (with photos)

Looking for gluten-free options at the Minnesota State Fair?

You’re in the right place!

I set out with my girls to enJOY a gluten-free fair experience. We wanted to have more options than corn on the cob — not that there’s anything wrong with corn, we’re all big fans and corn was actually on our list, but we ended up stuffed to the brim after a day of gluten-free goodness, so corn will have to wait until next year.

IMG_7907-0

Luckily my friend Amy from The Savvy Celiac had already done all the work to find the GF options at the fair — in addition to having a GF awareness booth in the Health Fair 11 building, she also has a list of gluten-free options and their locations waiting for you at the booth. Or you can print out the list and bring it along by clicking HERE.

I had grand plans of getting to ALL of the places on the list, but let’s get serious…there were waaaaaaaaay too many to get to and sample, even with four of us snacking! (this is a very good problem to have) The GF options list is TWO pages of gluten-free goodness, so bring friends or stay for days.

Here it is….gluten free at the Minnesota State Fair!

Three cheers for three weeks in a row! Big summertime commitment.

Speaking of commitments — last week we celebrated our FIVE year anniversary of Gluten Free Get Together events in and around Milwaukee. Each month I organize a dinner, event, or field trip and am joined by other gluten-free friends in the area. This group has become like family, I love them so.

And so do the generous companies who helped me fill GF swag bags for our event. The love they sent this year has left me speechless. (and we know that’s rare.)

Today’s to-do list is a shout out to ALL the companies who made our party such a huge success.

Please go spy, try, or buy ANY of these companies’ products! (some may even make you cry — tears of JOY that is)

image
Red Apple Lipstick — I’ve been singing their praises since I first tried their lip glosses. Now most of my make up bag comes from them. I have converted many friends and family members to their Lash Project Mascara. (read all about it HERE) The ladies were thrilled with the lipsticks and ralleye balms in their bags!

(Isn’t Katiekins just gorgeous!? She’s a Red Apple girl for sure!)
The Gluten Free Bar (the GFB) — Marshall and I have been in touch since he first started his company. Stories like this make me smile. He started with just a couple of bar flavors and has now expanded the business and is making his way across the country into stores. Kudos to him and his team!

Sentry in Delafield — Kerry and her team at the store are all about making our community happy. Their GF aisle and freezer section is impressive and their willingness to order new goods is appreciated. It’s my go-to store in the area!

GF Harvest — Another story that makes me smile every time. Forrest started this company in high school, yes high school, as a school project. I have been ordering their certified gluten-free oats for years and am always on the lookout for their new product lines. (like yummy granola!))

G.H. Cretors popcorn — they sent bags of their “Chicago Mix” and boy am I glad they did. AH.mazing.

Lovely Candy Co. — I’ve had a couple of their licorice products and was just as impressed with their caramels. Melt in your mouth!

Fahlstrom Farms — three cheers for this “Minnesota Nice” company that sent FULL sized bags of cheddar biscuit mix! If I’m going to buy a brownie mix, it will be theirs.

Ciderboys — Thanks to their bottle openers, we’ll be sipping cider all summer!

Cup4Cup — As you know, I’m a long time fan of Cup4Cup. For me, it’s worth the cost to have my family recipes convert over and turn out every single time.

Pamela’s — Game changers in the gluten-free s’mores world! The new mini graham-like crackers are too good. (meaning I could eat the whole box in one sitting!) The crowd gobbled these up for dessert. (my mamasita thinks these  will make excellent dippers for pumpkin dip!)

Jovial — the perfect pasta in gluten-free land! When I can use a pasta in a cold salad, I get excited. And when the husband asks for it, you know it’s good. Someday I hope to take my celiac sista on their GF trip to Italy!

Sweet Ali’s Bakery — we are BIG fans of Sweet Ali’s around here. We even take field trips down to the bakery (it’s not too far) in Illinois to get our fix. The dessert tray was gone in no time!

The Better Chip — my mama found these chips years ago and we have been eating them ever since. Their unique flavors: beets, jalapeno, spinach & kale, corn, and chipotles keep us on our toes. My nephews call the kale ones, “the green chips” and ask for them often. (they’re 3 and already on the kale train!)

Canyon Bakehouse — I just mentioned their deli rye style bread in last week’s post and am still raving about it. LOVE their breads. Period. (and everyone gets to try them now with the coupons they sent!)

Jones Dairy Farm — we love Wisconsin companies! The coupons they sent will be used on our breakfast menu soon.

Freedom Foods — they make a version of GF fruit loop-ish cereal that I eat by the handful. Their coupons will be put to good use!

And a special shout out to Marty’s in Delafield!!! (not to be confused with their Brookfield location — this safe, amazing service comes from Delafield only) We had to move the location of the event at the last minute and Duane, Maynard, and our fantastic servers made us feel right at home. (they even went out and got Lakefront New Grist for one of our GF peeps!) The pizzas were perfect, the salads were spot on, and the wings were baked rather than fried, just for us! THAT is the kind of safe service the gluten-free community deserves.

Head over to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all their websites — give them some Milwaukee gluten-free love and let them know how you liked their products. (also sign up for email lists to be up to date on their latests news and deals!)

Here’s to another five years of fun — thanks for being part of it all!

Tuesday To Do List — what to buy, spy, and try! (or sometimes cry about)

Every year or so I brainstorm to come up with a new way to share quick tidbits of information for readers.

This summer’s attempt is my “Tuesday To Do List” with all kinds of goodness I find on the web, gluten-free or otherwise, and want to share with YOU.

It could be things to BUY like these gluten-free oats that are perfect for your overnight oats or grandma’s (no flour!) monster cookies.

Or things I SPY on the web and am curious about — have you heard about this gluten-free coffee flour situation? Tell me more!

And it might be something new we should TRY. Anyone else have a yard full of mulberry trees? Which one of these recipes should we make first? (they aren’t all GF, but easy to convert.)

And because life isn’t always a birthday party with unicorns… there may be things that make us CRY and we just need to vent about. Like this food judging business that’s going around and has been for years. Pam from I’m a Celiac wrote the perfect piece on why gluten-free junk food happens sometimes and in moderation and we’re all still alive and there’s no need to put down another GF friend for how they eat.

I’m going to try (maybe that should be on this week’s list?!) to make this a weekly occurrence if you promise to come back each week to look over the list and let me know your thoughts or maybe even share a link for others to spy, buy, try or even cry about. (this could most definitely include crying tears of joy over cute puppies)

So… here goes!

Tuesday To Do List — what to buy, spy, and try! (or sometimes cry about)

  • Anyone else spy the new gluten-free products from Special K? My mom and nephew were in the middle of making gluten-free Special K bars and sent me a photo. And I texted back, “I’m sorry, but WHAT?!? I didn’t even know Special K had gluten-free items!” But now I do know. And you do too. 😉
  • Tracy from Shutterbean often posts simple recipes that are either already gluten free or easy to convert — who wants to try grilled pineapple? (with honey lime yogurt on top!)
  • I neeeeeeeed to try these banana coconut chocolate chip muffins from FrannyCakes! Leave it to a late night  baking session (realizing you are out of sugar!) to come up with something new and tasty.
  • Buy this book if you are new to the gluten-free adventure. Even if you’re not, it’s full of real life recipes that you can whip up on a weeknight — my celiac sista is a fan of the book as well, we both were wishing we had it over seven years ago when we were diagnosed. (although I will say that being diagnosed with celiac disease at the same time as your best friend sister is pretty swell)
  • Want to try these two ingredient Banana-Nutella popsicles with me? I think they should have a more fun name like Bananella popsicles or Nutellana pops, yeah? It’s the second one on the list in this post — there are several on the list I want to try.
  • I spy THE cutest berry picker. Ever. In the history of all berry hunts. (makes me a happy auntie to introduce my nephews to new foods — bring on the black raspberries and mulberries!)

If you end up buying, trying, or spying something new (or from the list) be sure to leave a comment to tell me. Always on the lookout for new ideas.

Stop back next Tuesday to see what makes the list!

As much as I wish I were getting paid big bucks to add these links to my page, I’m not. They are not affiliate links. I’m just sharing to share.

Gluten-Free 4th of July: a random roundup.

HELLO my friends!

I owe you about 23 catch up blog posts — London, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Scotland, and Dublin to name just a few. 😉

But for now, we’re unpacking boxes in our NEW HOME and taking a little time out to celebrate this weekend.

Need some ideas to get your celebration started?

A random list of gluten-free 4th of July-ness

IMG_6821

  • I can guarantee there will be some Tito’s being poured — they just sent over some goodies to kick off summer.

This year’s version of “Summer in the City.”

Pineapple Strawberry La Croix and fresh mango with some smooth Tito’s vodka. EnJOY!

  • Here’s hoping one of our friends brings pie — maybe cherry?
  • My GF nephew, Chef Carter made this summery salad over at grandma’s house and luckily she snapped a pic. Any red berries will work, blueberries are perfect for the blue (or maybe mulberries?) and banana slices to finish it off. He was SO proud.

IMG_6695

Over here, his auntie went with more of an indulgent treat, but it was a ladies’ crafternoon and I couldn’t help myself after seeing it on Pinterest. What should we call them? Firecrackers, Sparklers, Americabobs? Whatever you decide to call them, you have time to make them for the weekend — just whip up a batch of gluten free brownies and skewer them with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and marshmallows.

And our crafternoon turned out just fabulous!

Happy (gluten-free!) 4th of July!

gifts for your GFF (gluten-free friend)

Each year around this time, I get emails from my own friends and family as well as readers or random new friends who have found my site while searching for gluten-free gift ideas for loved ones — what DO you buy a GFF?

Santa… get ready!

Just diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity?

  • First things first, a new toaster.

Bella Dots Gluten Free Toaster

How about one of these fancy toasters from Bella Housewares?

“Gluten-free bread requires the right conditions to toast. Many gluten-free breads are more dense than regular bread – and a regular “toast” setting means crispy on the outside and cool/frozen on the inside – then, by the time it’s toasted throughout – edges are burnt. In order to get an ideal toast for gluten-free bread, BELLA Housewares developed a “Gluten-Free” setting for its latest collection, Dots 2.0.”

Story.of.my.life.

I got rid of our toaster the day I was diagnosed and never looked back. Although we do have a toaster oven up north at our cottage (where we have space!) that is dedicated as gluten free, I haven’t replaced the gluten-crumb-filled one — so let me tell you what a glorious gift it was to receive the shiny, red one to try out and share with all of you! I am L O V I N G it! No more fighting with the aluminum foil roll in the morning when I’m half awake and haven’t had my coffee yet. You can take gluten-free goods (bread, waffles, bagels) from the freezer straight to the toaster and the gluten-free setting will warm it from the inside out, still giving you a toasted outer edge, but no longer having a frozen middle and burnt outsides from re-toasting three times.

Who knew I missed my toaster so much?! Find them online or at Target right now for $24.99 and get toasting!

  • Have bread, will travel? You don’t have to miss out on morning toast or bagels when staying with family or at a hotel during the holidays — get your GFF some travel toaster bags!

Does your GFF love to cook and bake?

  • My very first baking book was Easy Gluten Free Baking by Elizabeth Barbone — still one of my all time favorites and I’ll be using it for Christmas baking again this year. (really, anything from Elizabeth is worth adding to your gift list!)

Can’t celebrate *with* your GFF in person, but want to send something safe and sweet?

  • Molly’s Gluten Free Bakery in Pewaukee, WI will ship right to their door. (they are a nut-free facility and can also do dairy-free) Be sure to include in your shipment: mint brownies, Mexican wedding cookies, lemon bars, and gingerbread cut outs.
  • Sweet Ali’s in Hinsdale, IL has become an addiction. They will love you forever.
  • Tate’s Bake Shop has more gift basket ideas than you’ll know what to do with!
  • My holiday go-to is from our local friends from Abigail’s Originals — THE best cut out cookies. Ever. Go. Order. (they are so affordable!)

photo 3-2

Maybe your GFF wishes they could cook, but feels just as happy to hang in the kitchen and watch? (or sip cocktails?!)

  • Start with the Arctic Chill muddler. For Old Fashioneds, Sangria, or maybe minty mojitos for New Years Eve? There’s a lifetime warranty AND it’s the top rated muddler on Amazon, you can’t go wrong. We are putting ours to good use on any cocktail you could even think of muddling fruit in!

photo 2

  • Make them a hot cocoa bar — an easy-peasy DIY gift that everyone can appreciate. (even more so if you throw in some RumChata!) You don’t need quite this crazy spread, but after hosting our GF Get Together holiday party and cookie exchange last year with a hot cocoa bar, I already had ALL the ingredients to package up some downsized versions for gifts, it was perfect!

photo 5-3

It doesn’t have to be food related. Many of the things on my wish list are found in the same aisle and have nothing to do with the kitchen:

  • I am in love with EO products — they are having a 30% off sale right now that you don’t want to miss! (it is so much easier to just see the “certified GF” icon for those of us who constantly read labels for a living…and their products are AH-mazing!)
  • I’m an EOS junkie. I can’t help myself. The coconut milk is my new fave. You can find them pretty much anywhere: Target, Walgreens, the grocery store. Stocking stuffers!

Here’s hoping some of these gifts find their way to YOU this holiday season — and if you’re STILL looking for ideas — stop back TOMORROW for a giveaway you do not want to miss!

xoxo

Rallying the Gluten Free Community — Support gfJules (formerly Jules Gluten Free)

I recently attended the Gluten Free Living Conference in Orlando — and as much as I want to share all of the fun photos from that weekend, there’s something else we have to talk about first.

If there is one thing I know about the gluten-free community is that when we need each other for support, people come together like I have never seen before. We rally behind those in need, give them a voice, or just allow their voice to be heard loud and clear.

So that’s why we’re here today. To clear the air. To let you know what’s been going with my friend Jules from Jules Gluten Free, now gfJules.

I know some of you are already big fans of her flour mix — it was one of the first flour mixes I experimented with when going gluten free in 2008. She is also one of the founders of the 1 in 133 campaign. Because of her hard work, the gluten-free labeling standard has passed and will go into effect in August! (She has helped everyone who is GF!)   I have had the chance to get to know Jules through her annual GF Cookie Contest and finally got to meet face to face in Orlando just weeks ago.

IMG_1071

Here’s a brief history of how Jules started and how we got to where we are today:

  • She started her company in 2006 after publishing her first book, set out to learn all things related to running a GF business and started selling her products in 2007.
  • Her business was booming and as we all know, “it takes a village” to get things done, so she took on business partners (investors) in 2008 to help run the daily operations — unfortunately in recent years it became quite clear that her vision (as a member of the GF community that she advocates for, educates, and holds near and dear to her heart)  and the vision her business partners had for the company were not the same.
  • Things went downhill from there with her partners behaving in a way that makes my blood boil and would take an entire blog post to discuss, (not paying her for her work, preventing her from communicating with OUR community through her business, and canceling the order for flours for her own wedding cake in just a few weeks) but instead of focusing on all of the negative (Jules wouldn’t want that!) I am here to rally our community to focus on the positive…

Jules is starting over…

  • She has resigned from her old company and is starting a new company, gfJules
  • Plans are in the works to bring her products back (and much more!) as quickly as possible, but as you know, this will take time and money. (I cannot even imagine the funds she has already put into this legal battle.
  • She’s a FIGHTER and is NOT giving up! See that smile on her face in the photo? That’s the one she wears every single day, even when times get tough, even when people she trusted turned into something they should be embarrassed of themselves for, even when it would have been easier to just call it a day and give up — not Jules, she’s more dedicated than ever to the gluten-free community!
  • The community was confused as to what exactly happened, which is why we need to rally together and get the word out about her new company, gfJules — and we need to come together to support our friend when she needs it most!

How we can help:

  • While you’re there, read the amazing comments of support and love from our community!
  • If you can, give a gift to Jules to help her rebuild her business and continue to do what she does best — GIVE to our community. There are gifts for giving  or maybe something more creative. I’m giving and hope you can too, any amount helps!
  • If you are interested in giving as a group, I for one would LOVE to see a recipe for our GF Get Together Group, something Milwaukee-style — I’ve raised over $4,000 in the last four years for the Celiac Disease Foundation, so I KNOW we could get together the $300 for this gift… if you’d like to join in the fun for this gift, let me know!
  • SHARE this post. Even if you are unable to give at this time, please considering passing this post along to others who may be able to help.
  • Send Jules some gluten-free-style love — your kinds words of support are what is keeping her going!

Not only will I be giving to her fundraising efforts, but I’ll be shouting about it from the rooftops — I can honestly tell you that she is a kind person with the most generous heart. After being on the expert panel at the conference, she made time for each and every person who waited in line to talk with her. I snuck in for a quick hug goodbye before I hopped on my plane, and there she stood, holding the delicate hands of an elderly woman, listening to her tell her stories of learning to bake gluten-free. It was the most touching moment. She’s the real deal, my friends. She loves this community and would do the same for each and every one of us.

Let’s rally!
