I was up and at ’em early today.
It’s my last day as a WOL — a “woman of leisure,” the nickname my husband gave sister Laura and I this summer.
My alarm was set for 6:00, just like a work day. I wanted to get up. Get moving. Make the best of this day. (“carpe the hell out of this diem” were my exact words on Facebook… don’t let Emmie read that part, Jules)
So far so good. Got an hour walk in by the lake — Milwaukee is a beautiful city, isn’t it?
Little, hidden treasures on the trails — ones you had never noticed before.
There’s something about being up early and soaking in some sun, treating your body to some heart pumping lovin’… it’s a good reminder that life is good.
And although my early rising didn’t necessarily get me a worm — I did come home HUNGRY and in need of a quick snack. (this was the point where I wished I had done some of my baking BEFORE the walk)
I wanted something filling, yet healthy — so I raided the pantry and came up with this.
GLUTEN-FRee “birdseed” snack mix
Combine equal parts of the following in a bowl:
- Nuts of your choice: cashews, peanuts, almonds, pistachios, etc.
- Raisins (I used light and dark)
- Dried berries: cherries, blueberries, cranberries, etc.
- Unsweetened coconut flakes
- Pumpkin seeds
- Sunflower seeds
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional — I just tossed a few to use them up)
It will fill you up and you’ll have a healthy snack to toss in your work bag for the week — see, I’m slowing adapting back to real life. 🙂
What else could we throw in there? ANYTHING you have in the pantry could work for this. Do you have favorites for your snack mix combo? Do tell!

Love mixes like this. Great for snacking when out running errands all day. Hard part is STOPPING. Portion control! I like to chop the nuts a bit. I’m a “small pieces” person. My son, too. Hubby can’t seem to understand. He’s a CHUNK person. He’s the meal chef at home.
By way of introduction: I enjoy your blog and have been following for some time. I started a gluten free, some vegan, bakery this year in Austin, Texas. Misty Morning Bakery.
Cheers, Sue Willman
Beautiful pics, Sarah! Simply, “throw together,” snack mixes like that are my favorite, often working as my own breakfast, too. 😉
