Friday (was two days ago) Photos: break for breakfast

Do you ever hear people say they don’t have time for breakfast? The very thought of skipping breakfast makes my stomach growl. We’ve heard it over and over that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I wouldn’t dream of missing it.

Sometimes you have time for rounding up all the supplies, buying fresh bacon, a long discussion on the best setting for the waffle maker, and more than 15 minutes to eat – instead of standing at the counter.

Other times it’s short and sweet. (or a little tart, if you don’t use sugar)

And most days it is somewhere right in the middle. Just right. (a slice of a “jumbo loaf” bread from Molly’s GF Bakery topped with natural peanut butter and strawberry-rhubarb jam from my Mamasita)

But every once in a while, we take a break from the norm and sweeten up breakfast a little.

I had found this oh-so-very-cute-foodie-craft idea on Pinterest, which is where I spend most of my free time these days. If you aren’t already on Pinterest, head on over there now and get your account set up — I will warn you, it is basically like crack. I apologize in advance for the time this will now take away from your loved ones.

My nephews (ages 8 and 5) were big fans of this “breakfast” idea and we had a blast making them, although they were not fans of waiting for them to set. And when little brother was told to take a break after his sixth one of the weekend, (he really wanted one for breakfast)  he said, “well… it’s bacon and eggs, that IS bweakfast” And I’m not one to argue with a little guy who pronounces it “bweakfast.”

You can make these at home in no time.

“Bacon & Eggs” 

Glutino pretzels

White Chocolate baking morsels (or almond bark – we used Nestle’s white chocolate baking morsels)

Yellow M&M’s (my little “lion” chef was happy to pick them out… and eat the other colors)

wax paper

Melt baking chips in microwave, stirring every 30 seconds, until completely melted. Spoon or pour small circles of the chocolate onto the wax paper and let set for a moment before adding the M&M’s. Finish off your combo with two “strips of bacon” using the pretzels. Allow to set until firm – this will be tough, and I can report from experience that taste testers do not mind if they are completely set before trying.

  1. Morning Sarah! I’m just about to make my classic breakfast – hot brown rice cereal with walnuts, organic raisins, cinnamon, a hit of brown sugar (and psyllium!) – takes me less than 5 minutes to cook up… and keeps me filled up until lunch!

    Love the eggs and bacon shot. I’ve looked at Pinterest – and for the very reasons you’ve sited… have decided to wait. We got rid of the tv last year – but my blog and internet surfing has replaced that black hole 🙂
