First things first — the cherry crisp recipe I promised you.
Gluten-Free Cherry Crisp
4 cups tart cherries (mine were frozen from the tree in our yard)
½ cup sugar
2 tablespoons reserved cherry juice or water
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Crisp topping:
½ cup GF oats
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup butter
½ GF flour (I used Jules GF Flour, but any mix of GF flours will work)
Sprinkle or three of cinnamon
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Combine cherries with sugar and set aside for a half hour. You know how I am with my recipes, you can make them your own. It may not be necessary to wait for a half hour, but I do, if you try something different, let me know! In the mean time, combine all of the crisp topping ingredients in a separate bowl. (you can use a fork to mash in the butter, but your hand work even better)
Bring cherry-sugar mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. In a small bowl, combine cherry juice and cornstarch. Because I used frozen cherries, there was plenty of juice, but you can add water if needed. Reduce heat and pour liquid into cherry mixture and stir constantly, it will thicken quickly, making one perfect cherry pie filling.
Remove from heat and pour filling into a 9 x 9 baking dish — or if you’re lucky like me, maybe your Mamasita gave you some cute little dishes to use for this. Either way. And you may want to grease up the dishes a little. Spoon the crisp topping onto the filling and bake for 30 mins, or until bubbly and heated through.
Dig in!

The gluten-free oats I used for this recipe were from GF Harvest/Gluten-Free Oats. The company has such a crazy-cool story — it was started by Forrest, who’s in his early 20’s and was diagnosed with Celiac Disease when he was two. He started the gluten-free oats adventure when he was in high school. Yes, high school. For his FFA project and it led to the successful company that it is today.
Not only is he adorable, but he’s smart too. And passionate about the company he and his family have built. I knew these oats would be perfect for my Grandma G’s monster cookies.
Perfect indeed. (I used the oats for those same cookies that I donated to the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer event)
But you don’t have to be a cookie lover to enjoy these tasty oats. I use them in my smoothies too. Easy way to add some bulk to your morning drink.
What about you — are you an oats eater? I sure hope so because I’m giving away a bag of these certified GF oats. All you have to do is leave a comment below telling me your favorite way to use oats. Breakfast only? Or are you using them in baking too?
Just leave a comment and you are automatically entered. I’ll pick a winner at random, on Halloween night — no trick, just a treat!
This drawing is for US residents only. I bought a bag of oats and Forrest was sweet enough to give me a bag as well, so I’m sharing with you. As usual, I just share my honest opinions with you.

Loved the recipe. My only modification was adding 1/4 tsp. of almond extract for the cherry filling. Add after thickening the cherries.

This crisp was ridic. Like, mouth-watering. Made a few mods: added 2″ grated ginger and used coconut oil to grease the pan. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!
I use GF oats to make cookies of all sorts, oatmeal of course, pie crusts, granola, and pancakes. That’s all I can think of for now, but I’m sure I have used them for other things too. I like to grind the oats to make oats flour and replace glutinous flour in certain recipes. It’s such good stuff!
I use oats to make meatloaf, since bread crumbs and crushed crackers are no longer an option. I also like to add them to yogurt…. kind of a granola-like texture.
You can always save ends of GF bread and put through food processor — DIY bread crumbs! 🙂 And there are all kinds of GF cracker options that could work.
I add oats to everything but my fav is in chocolate chip cookies, up sugar to 1 cup each brown and white, flour 2 cups half whole wheat, add 2 cups oats. Extends the recipe and everyone loves them,
Ooo I suppose I could tell you my fave way to use oats! Breakfast is my go-to with oats. I love to mix it up – fruity, chocolatey, peanut buttery, or more of a plain jane- it’s all good. I also put oats in meatballs and am going to make meatloaf soon using oats! They are so versatile! 🙂 Great giveaway!
Oooh I wish I would have looked at this website yesterday! I really want to make that cherry crisp! My hubby loves cherry cherry and, well I just love dessert – so it’s a win-win situation 🙂 I wish I lived in a bigger city sometimes because there are so many more G*Free options.
Check Kroger and their affiliates… often found in smallish cities and they have a far more extensive Gluten free offer than any other place in my town
I love cherries! I suppose they might be a harder to find now that we are in the fall season, but I can substitute with any fruit. I love the toppings! Oats are awesome! Thanks for posting this recipe 🙂
My favorite way to eat oatmeal is cooked with a little sugar, butter and peaches! yummy! Raisins are good in it too. My four year old likes it that way too. Sometimes we even have it for supper. Thanks for sharing!
I love Forrest’s story. I was happy I got to meet him at the Chicago GFAF Expo. I love oatmeal for breakfast, in cookies, on baked fruit, as granola. Any way I can eat oats, I’ll do it!
I LOVE GF oats! I use them for anything and everything – baking, breakfast… I love my “crisps”, cookies, apricot, bars, YUM!!! 🙂
I add raw oats to frozen fruit smoothies. Delicious and filling!

Thanks Forrest!! Your ambition and success provides those of us who need to be gluten free with an extra little treat we’ve missed having as part of our diet!! Hoping to be picked so I can make oatmeal bars with chocolate and butterscotch chips (may add some pecans, that sounded like a yummy addition up there by Diane M.), as well as try that amazing sounding cherry crisp recipe! : ) Also love them with fruit on yogurt!
To make breakfast/snack bars that are low iodine and GF (for thyroid treatment prep). Also I eat a lot of porridge when the belly’s on strike. 🙂
I have only been GF for two months, but I used to love making oatmeal raisin cookies with cinnamon chips.
My favorite is Oatmeal Rasin Cookies… Looking forward to makeing a batch soon! Forrest has such an amazing story. I love being able to support people like him
Thanks so much!
Gluten free oats for breakfast usually but my favorite is Monster Bars!
congrats to the young entrepreneur! And I love oats so I hope I win.
Oats are great for breakfast and so many other delicious baking projects. One of my family’s favorite cookies, cowboy cookies, are a yummy combo of oats, chocolate chips, and pecans.
I love oatmeal cookies, but haven’t made any gf ones yet. Your picture up there is making me seriously hungry. 🙂
I love Forrest and GF Harvest/GF Oats!!! Forrest is so passionate about providing a great product to a customer base who really needs great products. Best of luck to him and his company!
I love oats for breakfast as well as baked into cookies (both whole and grinding them up for oat flour!). I made some delicious caramel chocolate chip cookies with oat flour this past weekend and definitely consumed my fair share of GF oats…
My favorite way to eat oats is in an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. Yummm!
“Trick or Treat; Give me something good to eat–like GF oats!” -Love your blog! thanks for sharing!
I love oats! Pretty much any way but mainly made into Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal (breakfast this am)!! But I’ll also never turn down a oatmeal cookie either 😉
That cherry crisp looks delightful 🙂 I LOVE oats & they generally become a staple for my breakfasts as the winter months creep into the Midwest. During Fall/Winter I enjoy them with some pumpkin, almond milk, cinnamon & sugar. Best. Winter. Breakfast. Ever.
In my meatloaf
In cookies
For breakfast
Granola bars
…I love oats
My hubby is Celiac……LOVES oatmeal, not just in the morning, but anytime of the day or night. It is a comfort food for him. For me…..one of my fav cookies is oatmeal raisin! I used to bake WAY more than I do now…maybe someday I will again!
I’m relatively new to following a GF diet because I just recently became gluten intolerant, so I’ve only experimented with oats for breakfast. I love adding in maple syrup or honey.
